The Sisters of Mercy
The Sisters of Mercy é uma banda britânica de rock gótico, formada em Leeds, em 1980 por Andrew Eldritch (vocais) e Gary Marx (guitarra). A eles juntaram-se Ben Gunn (guitarra, substituído por Wayne Hussey, em 1983) e Craig Adams (baixo).
Apesar de ter lançado apenas três LPs, The Sisters of Mercy tornou-se uma das mais influentes bandas da década de 80. A banda enfrentou instabilidade: apenas o cantor e compositor Eldritch participou dos três LP.
A música de The Sisters of Mercy reúne elementos de psicodelia, dance e punk. O cantor Eldritch tem como principal traço a voz, profunda. As letras da banda tratam de temas comuns ao rock gótico.
Apesar de rejeitar a classificação de gótica, The Sisters of Mercy foi uma liderança no gênero, tendo alcançado amplo sucesso na Inglaterra e Estados Unidos. Desde os primórdios do grupo, tocando em bares e clubes de Leeds, a banda foi marcada por atrair uma legião de admiradores.
The Sisters of Mercy inovou ao usar uma máquina para executar a percussão, apelidada de Doktor Avalanche.
Dificuldades de relacionamento com Andrew Eldritch foram frequentemente citadas como a principal causa de rupturas por parte de membros de Sisters of Mercy. Em 1985 Gary Marx sai da banda, e forma os Ghost Dance; Wayne Hussey e Craig Adams formam os The Mission, em 1986.
Hoje, além de Eldritch, Chris May e Ben Christodoulou fazem parte de The Sisters of Mercy.
A origem do nome da banda é discutível, mas poderá vir de uma música de Leonard Cohen ou de uma ordem religiosa de freiras católicas.
Apesar de já não editarem trabalhos de originais, continuam a fazer digressões. Em Junho de 2007 actuaram em Espanha, na Alemanha e na Bélgica.
